I See Dead People

Mark 3:28-30

Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, 29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.” 30He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.”

I was watching a station I don’t usually watch and I was shocked to hear some of the language that was allowed to be broadcast. Do you remember back far enough, if you were even born, when even married people slept in separate beds on tv shows? To say any kind of expletive that was beyond, “oh, gosh” was unthinkable!

Yesterday my husband and I sat in McDonald’s parking lot eating our lunch. You still cannot go inside. A car pulled up next to us blaring the radio or cd, and what was being proclaimed in that car as ‘entertainment’ was just foul!

Well, the other night I had a dream. I don’t usually have dreams that are scary or disturbing, but, this was an exception. I saw dead people walking all over the place. In stores, on the street, in restaurants. I knew they were dead by the look on their faces. I remember asking God; ‘what does it mean?’ Even in my dream I received His answer. These are people who blasphemed the Holy Spirit.

Definition of blasphemy. 1 a : the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God accused of blasphemy. b : the act of claiming the attributes of a deity for a mere man to suggest that he was … divine could only be viewed … as blasphemy — John Bright †1889.

When I awoke it was on my mind. I asked the Lord why it is only blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that is unforgivable? While I am not saying that this explanation is in the Bible, I do feel it was given to me by the Holy Spirit. You can choose to disagree. See, we honor (for the most part) God the Father, Creator of the Universe. We do have an understanding of His power. We see it in creation. Jesus the Son, well He went to the cross in exchange for US! We do owe Him a debt of eternal gratitude. But the Holy Spirit, we don’t seem to understand His role in our lives. As a result, he is like the middle child in a family. Dad favors oldest, Mom favors the baby, but the middle child feels left out. Sure, the middle is well taken care of, but there is just the ever so slight, slight. I wonder if God feels that way about His Holy Spirit persona. As a result, if we cannot acknowledge Him, we have committed the sin of blasphemy-the unpardonable sin!

The Holy Spirit is our Comforter. Remember Jesus said He had to leave, but He would send the Comforter. This is an indwelling presence that is will us all the time. It is almost too good to be true that we have a person-hood of God indwelling us all the time! It means that we are never alone, there is always someone to talk to, get answers from and feel the comfort of ‘God with us!

So, the dead men walking in my dream are still living on this earth. Still being disrespectful to the Holy Spirit in the Trinity. Still awaiting the sentence they have already received-blasphemer!

Scripture says they are guilty of ETERNAL sin! Remember this childhood song? “Oh be careful little mouth what you say?” Turns out, that should be a reminder for us adults as well! Let me know what you think.
