O Store Gud!

Hi friends, here’s a thought from my Pastor husband! Enjoy it!

Nehemiah 1:55

Then I said: “LORD, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments,

As a 26-year-old German named Carl Gustav Boberg was walking home from church one Sunday morning in 1885, His eyes were drawn to the storm clouds that suddenly appeared in the sky. It was obvious that a very violent storm was about to be released. Thunder, lightning and heavy rains forced him to seek shelter quickly.
Much to Boberg’s surprise, the dark clouds dissipated as quickly as they first darkened the sky. The storm ceased and the sky resumed its peaceful, calm status.
“How amazing,” he thought. He sat down and wrote a poem entitled “O Store Gud,” which translates “O great God.” Years later, Stuart K. Hine, a minister in Poland, translated the poem to English, added several verses and put it to music. It quickly became that faithful hymn of the church that is still sung in our churches today. That hymn, of course, is “How Great Thou Art.”
“Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee, how great thou art, how great thou art.” Such simple words yet they billow God’s greatness. The hymn is filled with powerful affirmations of God’s majesty and strength. Phrases like, “Thy power throughout the universe” and “He bled and died to take away my sin,” instill God’s grandeur and mercy. The song writer is filled with awesome wonder at the things that God has created for our enjoyment and eternal life. So much greatness just must be shouted and shared!
Both Carl Boberg and Stuart Hine took note of all of creation around them. They made note of the things that God had done for them through the years as well as what will be given to them in the future through no efforts of their own. They got so excited about God’s great feats that they just had to put it in writing and music.
Maybe we need to take a hard look at what God has done for us in our life so far. Think about how the God of the universe and all of its creation has even found the time to create a life of protection and blessing for us. Two thousand and twenty is already filled with God’s greatness for us. His care and protection is encapsulating! Look up! He truly is a great God!
