Our Father’s Business

Psalm 103:17-18

But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children— with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts

It is so funny to me to go where my granddaughter works, a retail store, and see her working! Why would that be so funny to me? I guess because it means she has grown up and I must start thinking of her in that way. We purchased some items and she checked us out-efficiently!

I was reminded of my first job…at a fast food restaurant. Learning the register, talking to customers politely, taking their orders, listening for the beep that the fries were done, making change, and cleaning up after we closed, whew…it was a lot! The next ‘first job’ I experienced was much more fun. It was our oldest son’s job in a restaurant. Since the restaurant was brand new, and so was he, they allowed the wait staff to ‘practice’ on family members with either an appetizer or a dessert-for free, before the restaurant was officially open. We sat and enjoyed being waited on by this very professional 16 year old that lived in our home, yet we were unfamiliar with this professional side! We were very impressed! We all have our first encounters with the ‘work world’. Those encounters prepare us for a world we were previously not really engaged in, or a part of. Those jobs, and the training we receive there, bring out a side of us we may not have even know existed in us before.

Our Father God has a business model also. He does not have an HR department and we don’t have to fill out a myriad of paperwork. One thing we do need before we can start working in His business is a personal relationship with Him. We need to talk with Him daily to receive the download of our ‘work order’. It changes daily. We need to read His manual with His business model called the Bible. That book has every circumstance outlined with the correct response described for us.

Sadly, many of God’s employees have signed up for work, but they do not read the manual or put in the time to train with His instructions. As a result His workers are often inefficient. They don’t know how to respond to Him when He tells them to work on a new project. They are easily distracted by the things they feel they must do first before they can take time to work on God’s project. If our career was in the medical field, or fire or police, when the emergency is announced, we would drop everything-and run. Time is of the essence in these circumstances. Life or death may be in the speed of the response. Trained professional people know how to provide the best care to avoid death and sustain life.

Our jobs in God’s business are just as critical. We may be the only responder to a desperate cry of a person who had suicide in the back of his mind. People who are grieving over the death or even an illness of a loved one may be on the ‘work order’ for the day. Just a friendly visit, or a break for them is all God wants us to do. Maybe a meal or a friendly note is the ‘work order’. I do know that every day on His ‘work order’ He expects us to show kindness, and even look for ways to show it to others. Just little things mean a lot when you are under stress.

We went to a store recently that allowed you to ‘rent’ a cart. Put in a quarter, get it back when you return the cart. As I was getting my quarter ready a gentleman offered me his cart as he was leaving. I offered him my quarter, so her would not be out a quarter. He explained ‘the people before us gave us the cart’. So, when we left the store, we gave the cart to the next man. He offered us the quarter, we gave the same explanation. Everyone laughed. Now, I must say this. No one paid the quarter, the store did not loose any money, and we each had a chuckle and a pleasant experience that lasted long after the cart was pushed back into the cart holder. I’m still talking about it!

That’s our Father’s Business! He will never fire you, though He will never give you a vacation. You are always must be a ready worker as the job He calls you to do, may be life or death, only He knows. But when you sign on to His business, you get a benefit package that is out of this world! Try it, He’s always hiring!
