Just STOP it! How many times have you said that to your child? Maybe your spouse? How many times have you had that said to you? Maybe you have even said it to yourself. Maybe you saw “Saturday Night Live’ episode when Bob Newhart, the knowledgeable psychologist says to his client, ‘Just stop it?’ Good for a laugh, not good advise. As adults our minds take us down paths that can be very productive; Lord, how can I do something good for you today? Or, very unproductive; ‘Did you see the look on her face when he walked into the room?’
How do we get ourselves out of the gravel rut we go to in our minds with sinful thought? Just stop it! That works, right? Wrong. If it were that simple, we would be in a much better place in this world. No, we tend to see that gravel path, a trail off the Godly path in our minds, we know it, and we still choose it. WHY? Our sinful nature It! must be lassoed and chained and thrown into a pit, daily.
Ephesians 3:20 NIV
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,
in that verse. Power at work within us! That’s the answer. We know in the pretend world of Super Hero’s every one has a tripping up point. In our frail humanity, so do we. That old man we used to be lurks in the dark areas of our minds, on those gravel off roads that lie just beyond our lighted path. Our spirit led mind says; ‘don’t go there.’ Our old man says; ‘why not? Remember the enjoyment you derived from doing what you wanted to do? ‘ So, how does ‘Just stop it’ work for you then?
2 Corinthians 7:10 NIV Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death
I am quoting some extra scriptures today because sometimes we need additional ‘ammunition’ to use against the enemy of our souls. We need to post these verses on the bulletin board of our mind so when a thought that does not belong there tries to break through, the filter of the Word captures it and throws it out. Remember how that gravel road was uncomfortable, shaky, dusty and you weren’t even sure where you would end up? Remember on the straight and narrow path you will always be on the right road. And, you always know your destination.
