PSALM 100:4
Enter His gates with Thanksgiving, and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good, His love endures forever and His faithfulness continues to all generations.
November brings with it the brisk, cold days that require coats, gloves and scarfs. It is the month to rake the leaves, bring in anything that will not freeze will, and plan your Thanksgiving Celebration! It is the first holiday of the season that is called; the “holidays.” It includes; Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and then the New Year. Ever wonder how Thanksgiving began? You probably learned in school about the pilgrims and Indians eating a meal together when they were thankful, they had survived! Most of the pilgrims died that first winter from starvation, cold and illness.
While that story is true, Thanksgiving was not an official holiday until President George Washington established it in 1789! In his official proclamation, President Washington set aside November 26th as a National Day of Thanks and explained why we should be thankful, in his proclamation; ‘the necessity for such a day sprung from the Almighty’s care of Americans prior to the Revolution, assistance to them in achieving independence, and help in establishing the constitutional government.’ This is just part of his proclamation; you can google it for the rest. He established Thanksgiving as a day to thank God for watching over the fledgling nation in the war for our independence. We still need to give thanks to God for our continued independence, as well as they many other blessings we have in this great nation of ours.
When you sit looking at your Thanksgiving meal, whatever it may be, abundant or meager, it is only by God’s grace that this nation has been so blessed! I pray that God will continue to bless us, as we continue to bless Him!
Blessings on your Thanksgiving this year, and give thanks to THE ONE who made it all possible!
