Sunday -Sabbath-Shabbat Rest!

I Timothy 2:8

I desire therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath or doubting (a)

When I was a child my Sunday’s went like this; church, family dinner, rest or play quietly. Maybe your Sunday’s were the same. If you needed to purchase anything for Sunday dinner-you bought it Saturday, or did without it. If you needed a cough medicine or an aspirin, you had to wait till Monday. There were no drug stores open on Sunday. Even if you forgot bread for Sunday dinner there was no place to get it as no stores were open Why? Was there no one to work? Nope. It was a reverence for God and His ‘Ten Commandments’. Exodus 20 verse 8 tells us emphatically; Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy. Holy meaning ‘set apart for God’. We have 6 days to do all our work and play, but the Sabbath, is for God!

When He handed down those commandments with Moses, He was serious! The underlying promise was; obey and be happy, healthy and prosperous. Disobey; spend your life spinning your wheels trying to catch-up! Look anything like today?

How did this all change? I don’t know. I watch on Sunday as people are shopping like it was a Saturday, not for just an emergency. There are movies, concerts, parties ball games and many more events too numerous to mention. People just keep breaking this command with no thought of the consequences.

Think about this for a minute. If God said it back then, did He ever change it? Did he make exceptions to His laws? No an No. Should we wonder why so many of our lives are running amuck when we are not following God’s law?

Oh, just wanted to mention, there are some businesses that are not as concerned about their ‘bottom line’ as they are about God’s Top Ten! One is ‘Hobby Lobby’ another is Chick-fil-A’. Get your crafts and chicken Saturday because Sunday is their day of rest! I know I have seen other restaurants and business’ closed on Sunday also. They are few and far between!

I trust you are going to church, or have gone to church today. I trust you raised your hands in worship of God, as the verse says. I trust you will take this, and every commandment to heart as you move forward in your best life serving God. After all is said and done, is one day really too much to set aside for God after all He does for us?
