Nighttime pool party with Nana!

Psalm 77:11-12

I will remember the works of the Lord; Surely, I will remember your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all your work.

For the past few years my husband and I have what we like to call ‘Camp Peace and Harmony’. (That is always what we are hoping for!) We started this tradition when our boys were younger and we would have 2 of our boy’s cousins stay will us for a week, then they would stay with Ron’s brother for a week. Now we are grandparents and thought we would like to continue the tradition!

We have 3 grandson’s ranging in age from 13 to 7 this year. I plan a VBS type of program so it is not a ‘free for all’ all day. My husband is the cook.

This year our theme is ‘Historic Heroes’. I chose George Washington Carver, Betsy Ross and Alexander Hamilton as our hero’s and Creation for our Biblical theme. Just as God created the world in 7 days, George, Betsy and Alexander used their creativity to enhance this nation with items we still use and enjoy today.

While I am writing this the ‘3 amigo’s’ are cooperating to create a fort behind me. Thay have used every blanket I have in the lower-level playroom. They have removed every pillow from the couches, chairs and even my toss pillows, and put them in the fort. My different sized of work out weights become the stabilizers for the blankets, and a couple lamps inserted shed some light on the topic they are discussing. Not sure why they find that so much fun, but I did it as a kid, my boys did it with their friends, and now I am watching my 3 grandsons do the same thing. Give’em a blanket and a corner and they are content-for a while!

I enjoy these times we have together! I try to talk with them one-on-one to find out what is going on in their world. It can be revealing, surprising, mundane or just nothing, but it is always fun!

We made ‘Betsy Ross’ flags when I told them about how she was asked by President Washington to make a flag for the new nation. Evan and Preston put their names and birthdates one the flag. Grant chose to put his nickname and some decorations…and a $ sign. He is the Entrepeneur! The owner of a lemonade and bracelet stand!

We did some ‘peanut butter balls’ remembering George Washington Carver’s contribution to agriculture-crop rotation and over 300 uses for the lowly peanut. Of course, I talked to the boys about the historical hero’s faith in God and their dependance on the Almighty for their creativity.

We made an obstacle course when I told them about Alexander Hamilton. He overcame many obstacles and still became a very important part of the formation of our nation. One of the events was a water gun shoot out at a target. The other events were hurdles, a sack race, a hula hoop contest, and a water bottle flip on a target.

All the parents and grandparents cheered them on as each one did their best to have the shortest time running through the course.

The evening was punctuated by a nighttime pool party with ‘glow sticks’ as our lights! I had to get in on that! We gazed at the summer sky trying to find the stars that make up the Canis Major’ Constellation. We couldn’t-too cloudy!

I was repeatedly reminded of God’s magnificent handiwork as Grant took photos of the flowers, butterflies and worms. I took pictures of God’s best work…my grandsons! I hope it will be a fun memory for them to store away and revisit remembering fun with Nana and PopPop. I know it will be a memory I revisit-often!
