Wisdom From A Six Year Old

Psalms 19:1-3 NIV

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.

Look at that very serious six year old face. He has not even gotten his big teeth’ in yet and he’s thinking great big thoughts! Now that does not happen all the time. Usually he is just being a six year old boy. Playing baseball, throwing rocks, getting filthy in the dirt and telling his Mom he does not need a shower. We all disagreed!

Yet our youngest grandson is a deep thinker. One day his Kindergarten teacher found him looking up at the sky during recess. She asked him, What are you thinking Preston?” without hesitation he replied, “I’m talking to God.” She was a little surprised, but fortunately chose not to discourage him. He continued by suggesting to her that it would be a good thing for her to do also. He then continued with this; “if you could wish for anything, what do you think you would wish for?” She said, “I would like to help people in the world so there wouldn’t be any problems.” He thought that through as he walked with her toward the school. Finally, he decided, “I would like to wish everyone had knowledge. I think with knowledge we would be able to figure out how to fix all our own problems.”

Mrs. Martin was speechless! They walked together into the school. She finally said, “I believe you are right, Preston!”

Of course, as Nana, I think my grandson has the wisdom of Solomon. But, in reality, he has a real ‘working’ relationship with God! There are a few Biblical truths I would like to share with you to encourage you today. First is the fact that even though Preston was not sitting in a Sunday School class, or having the Bible read to him, he recognized God, and connected with Him in conversation. Us grown-up theologians call it ‘prayer’. You can have this conversation anytime, anywhere, and there is no law going to stop it!

He also, very casually, made a suggestion to her, after she broached the subject, that it would be a beneficial thing for her to talk to Him also. Conversational evangelism! No script, no effort, no force, just two people connecting with each other, but one of them had been in conversation with God. It made all the difference.

Once that chatter door was open, this six year old took advantage and entered into her world of thought. He asked her an opinion question. It made her think because he had already been in deep thought with God, so she knew that even for all his child-like behaviors, he thought deeply! When she expressed her opinion, it may have even been with a selfish satisfaction. Always the teacher, providing the example. But in his sweet innocence, he was able to reach beyond just wanting to help some, but, actually ask for the gift that WOULD help everyone!.

He’s just a six year old. He digs up worms, fishes, and falls in the creek, he eats too much chocolate, gets up at 4:00am, cries and runs to Mommy when he stubs his toe, and does most things that six year olds do. But deep within that six year old, and all of the rest of us, is a place made for God to fit into. When we find that fit, it is truly a match made in Heaven, because I believe, God has a place deep within Him, made for us, and when they link, it’s sublime, weather we are six, or 66, or anywhere between.

Have you found that ‘sweet spot’ in your life yet? Take a lesson from a six year old, look up at the sky, and talk to your Heavenly father, oh, and remember to listen, that’s the best part!
