Driven To Distraction

Years ago, I taught 11th and 12th grade students with ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder. This is very common mindset for numerous children. Many think that this diagnosis means that the person cannot focus on anything and learn. Nothing could be further from the truth! In reality, it means that a student with ADD focuses on everything, all at the same time! They have difficulty staying on task with any one thing. Their minds wander off to chase objects and concepts that grab their attention. This very bright child’s mind is always responding to outside stimulation. Can I be so bold as to say that many Christian people today have ADD? That’s right! They are easily distracted by the world around them. Any new age religion that flutters by catches their eye. They are easily lured by different beliefs. Advertisements for books that profess doing life “your way” come rolling off the shelves. Whatever new thing is out there, these people jump at the chance to try it! James 1:22-25 reads like this:“Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man viewing his natural face in a mirror. He views himself, and goes his way, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But whoever looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues in it, and is not f forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in his deeds.”It is important for us to stay focused on our Lord and the task that He has called each of us to do. He has a perfect plan for us all. Don’t get sidetracked or swayed into believing that there is something better out there. There isn’t! Don’t think that salvation comes to us in many ways including nature. It doesn’t! Escaping the consequence of our sin can only be achieved through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. This is the only way to experience a life full and free and as James states, filled with blessings for our deeds.Let’s stay focused on a consistent walk with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our eyes drifting to other things just don’t ADD up. (Pardon the pun, I just couldn’t resist.) We must keep all of our attention on God!
