Ephesians 6:2
Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise; that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.
It was another fun visit with my husband’s brothers and their wives. This time we decided to go to my mom’s apartment for a brief visit. We went to her apartment first thing in the morning, and caught her in her pajamas, but very cute leopard pajamas! After a visit with her discussing our plans for the day, her special trip to Egypt and Israel (many years ago), we went off to enjoy our plan for the day, leaving her behind. I thought about what she said as I left, ” my leg is still hurting me.” My heart hurts for her. Now at age 87 there are very few things that bring a smile to her face. We did that for her in our visit! I saw her brighten up as she recalled her trip to Wales, Egypt and the pyramids, riding a camel, nearly burning down an apartment with an electrical fire, flying to Egypt by herself (before 9-11 restrictions), and even her great-granddaughter coming over to show Gram she was all dressed up for the dance she was going to.
So much of her life has ‘fallen through the open door into forgetfulness’ that when she finds an old memory that brings her joy, or a new memory that brings her joy, it gives me joy.
She is often forgetful; she often repeats herself; she often calls me by a different name, but I am the only one of all of us in the photo that has a mom. They tell me to appreciate her as without a mom or dad, they feel like orphan! I understand, and I will do my best to honor and appreciate her while she is still with us! I am trying to follow in her footsteps as she always honored her mom. God is fulfilling His promise and blessing her with a long life!
We met a new cousin recently through ancestry research. He dubbed her ‘the queen’ as she told him she is the only sibling left out of the 14 original children of my Baba’s. Yes, mom, YOU are the Queen! I honor you, my Mom-queen!
