What could be more innocent than seeing Christmas through the eyes of a child? Still, we are all like children when it comes to perceiving the wonder that occurs when we discover something that could never have happened without God’s intervention! We have no other explanation for it, we call it a miracle!
On December 24, 1906, one such miracles happened that changed the course of our entire world. Through this one ‘miracle’ the entire globe had the potential to be connected. The generation of children after that date saw nothing miraculous about how we communicate with each other. Before that date we used a series of ‘dots and dashes’ called Morse code to communicate the status of ships at sea. After that-you actually heard someone’s voice!
The ‘miracle’ invention I am referencing is the radio. Did you think it always existed? I know I did. We don’t even think about life before these modern miracles. Still, it was invented by Meconi but perfected by Reginald Fessenden. He is credited with saving many lives on the Titanic many years later, in 1912, as his radio was a much quicker and more efficient way to get the emergency message to people who could help.
On the beautiful Christmas Eve of 1906, Reginald first broadcast Handel’s Messiah, then he played the Christmas classic, ‘Oh, Holy Night’ on his violin. But the precious words are what we remember, never having hearing human voice over a radio before! They were the timeless words from Luke 2:14; “GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST ON EARTH PEACE, GOODWILL TOWARD MEN.”
This was more than a miracle of scientific ingenuity, it was a miraculous intervention into the natural order of science when a voice was translated with no wires, but even more miraculous was when a Savior was born to us through miraculous intervention by God!
Have yourself a merry little Christ-mas. Give Glory to our God who made it all possible.
John 1:3
Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.
