A Look in the Rear view Mirror

2 Timothy 2:15 NIV

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

I don’t think this is a good idea for driving your car, or living your life, looking in the rear view mirror I mean. Often when we do that, our memories become greater than our dreams. That’s when we are headed for the grave. Sometimes, however, it is nice to look back and see how far we have come.

Recently I watched a show that featured several Christian singing artists from 40 years ago. This was when the Christian music genre was really making a big splash on the scene. I remember I had albums by many of these artists; Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Larnelle Harris, Russ Taff, Stephen Curtis Chapman and Sandi Patty. These and many others were on the show. As they came out and sang their hits from the 80’s, I nearly cried! It just brought me right back to a simpler time, in my life, and in our nation. I felt like I lived my life right along with them. I had two young boys at the time. We were very active in our church and the boys would hear this great array of gospel music in our home, in the car and anywhere else we could play it.

Music penetrates our minds and hearts with a message. What message we choose is our to make, by the music we choose. We can choose music that is just a nonsense melody and word combination. Harmless. Neutral in it’s affect. Just fun. We can choose songs that have messages that motivate us to be or do something. Maybe something good, maybe not! Or we can choose lyrics to songs that uplift us and motivate us to do what is right in God’s eyes. These people listed, and so many more, do just that. They did not come out proclaiming they are the shining example of what a Christian should be. Most of them had their struggles and their pain. What they did do, for my home , was make the way, and my day a little brighter, a little more pleasant, and gave me an alternate music to listen to. Something that would not nudge me to sin, make me angry, or break my ear drums! Music, like the music David played for his sheep, that was a reprieve for a weary soul. A comfort and soothing balm running around in our minds, helping us to draw near to Him.

I just wanted to give these artists, and so many more a shout out. You will never know how much your music influenced my life, and so many others. Thank You for your sacrifices.
