Harvest Heros

Luke 10:2

He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the LORD of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

I really enjoy the crisp clean scent of fall. I like the cooler weather, the plaid clothing, the scent of cinnamon in the air and especially the colors! Everywhere you look, (at least in north east PA) the color is vibrant…for a while anyway! How can you resist those orange, burgundy and olive green leaves as they fall everywhere reminding us of God’s variety in His color pallet.

You may not have known this, but the Bible talks quite a bit about the fall harvest! Of course, God in His wisdom uses the illustration of harvest, something most people know and understand. Then He connects it to the beautiful spiritual event of a soul being redeemed, or harvested from the garden of hell, into the garden of life in Christ! In the verse above He refers to Himself as the ‘Lord of the harvest.’ He is trying to help us understand that people are the harvest ripening in the fields of sin. It is our responsibility as believers in Christ to notice them in that field and ‘pick’ them out of it, placing them gently in the harvest of souls giving them the opportunity to submit their lives to Christ.

It appears that from this verse there are not enough workers, or evangelists, working to harvest souls from the fields of sin! What can we do in this age of political correctness to tell people about the love of God and give them the opportunity to move into God’s harvest? Well, whenever we have an opportunity…seize it! Don’t think it over too much. It might just be the very word that a lost soul needed to hear!

Remembering my lost condition before I came to Christ, it was often a kind word or gesture that would give me some encouragement. All the ‘little insignificant’ things add up and are used by God to remind us we need Him. As we enjoy the colors of this beautiful season, let’s remember we serve a colorful God who is eager to have His harvest brought into His barn of Salvation. Let us always help Him reap those souls into His Kingdom and become His Harvest Hero’s!
