Improve Your Smile!

2 Timothy 3:16 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

I was just amazed at the amount of drilling going on today!  First it started in one area, then before I knew it the two with the drills and other equipment were working on a second and even a third area.  The noise was deafening, and the debris was flying.  It was so close to my head!  I was in the middle of it all.   I was getting crowns on three teeth!

Of course, after three shots of the numbing stuff, I was feeling no pain.  My mind was racing however as I had the dentist and the dental technician hovering over me, so closely I saw the very tiny hairs on their  brows.  I felt like a road and they were the construction workers.

You do have a lot of time to think as you are incapacitated with equipment and ‘play-dough’ goop in your mouth.  Not to mention the drillers over your face.  Four minutes and a mold is made and hardened.  I just closed my eyes and allowed the Holy Spirit to speak, listening for the dentist’s instructions too; “Open wide”, “bite down”,  “Grind a little”.   I admit, I had to be told twice a couple times as I was not paying attention.

When I got back to what the Holy Spirit was saying, I was fascinated.  He was talking about this drilling process.  This was an amazing, high tech way of fixing my teeth, yet, this process is replicated in our lives, daily.  We are similar to a mouth full of teeth with cavities.  Daily the garbage we watch, read, listen to and even think about gives us rotten ‘cavities’ of stuff in our hearts.  Things we see spur emotions that lead to speech, and then into action.  These rotten things need to be ‘drilled out’ before they hit the nerve.  If the nerve is hit, an entirely different procedure must ensue.  Root Canal!  This is a much more extensive and painful way to get the rotten diseased parts out, before replacing it with good material.  But it can be done, and the Holy Spirit is capable of doing it.  There is one caveat to this entire improvement project…we must say yes to it.  My teeth had been in disrepair for quite a while.  It wasn’t until I was motivated to begin the process of repair, that the repair could begin.  The beauty at the end of this process is that I will have some beautiful teeth, fully functional with no more pain.

Same with us.  We may see the rot, or sin in our lives, we may know in our heads it does us no good to have it there, but it is not until we are convicted by the Holy Spirit to remove it that we begin the painful process of drilling, or even root canal.  The beauty of this process is we will have a restored inner beauty, we will be able to function in truth, no more secrets, and the pain of being hypocritical in some areas of our lives will be eliminated.  Another very special part of the process is that we have the promise that the Lord will walk with us through it.  Though He does not take all the pain away, He does numb it enough to be bearable.

At some time or another you may find yourself in the dentist chair facing that drill.  Think of it as a reminder, what do I need to get drilled out of my life?  Improve your smile! Improve your life!
